Ramaswamy’s departure comes amid growing indications that he will announce his candidacy for governor of Ohio.
Ramaswamy steps down as DOGE co-leader
Originally named to co-leads DOGE alongside MuskRamaswamy cited plans in Ohio and a continued intent to support Donald Trump’s agenda.
“It was my honor to help support the creation of DOGE. I am confident that Elon and his team will succeed in streamlining government. I will have more to say very soon about my future plans in Ohio,” the message read.
National political reporter Taylor Popielarz confirmed through sources that Ramaswamy’s gubernatorial ambitions necessitated his departure. Quoting a spokesperson for the Trump-Vance transition, Anna Kelly, Popielarz revealed Ramaswamy plans to serve in an elective role.
“A familiar source confirms to me that Ramaswamy is no longer with DOGE as he announces his candidacy for governor of Ohio early next week. “It became clear that he could not campaign and lead DOGE at the same time,” Popielarz said.
Ramaswamy did not completely denied the speculation. However, his departure would not be entirely voluntary. According to Politico, Musk had become unhappy with Ramaswamy, with tensions escalating after a controversial post on X in December.
In the post, Vivek Ramaswamy critical American work culture, suggesting that tech companies hire foreign workers because of a culture that “worships mediocrity over excellence.” This, coupled with his growing interest in Ohio politics, led Musk to push for his removal.
“Everyone wanted him out. They wanted it taken down before the tweet – but they kicked it to the curb when this came out,” Politico reportedciting a Republican strategist close to Trump.
Meanwhile, Trump made sure to mention DOGE during his inaugural speech on Monday. Similarly, during Trump’s inauguration ceremony, Musk said he intended to take DOGE to Mars, playing with Dogecoin price sentiment from the start.
“We’re going to take DOGE to Mars,” Musk joked.
The agency was designed to reduce federal spending through budget cuts and massive layoffs. Key figures in the crypto industry, including the CEO of Coinbase Brian Armstrong and co-founder of Gemini Cameron Winklevosshad expressed strong support for the newly created DOGE
The promotion of DOGE by Trump and Musk triggered a temporary rise in Dogecoin prices. However, it corrected sharply, falling more than 7%, as news of Ramaswamy’s departure unfolded.
The initiative also encountered significant resistance. According to Washington P.ost, consumer advocacy groups Public Citizen and public interest law firm National Security Counselors filed thecostumes against DOGE minutes after Trump took office.
The lawsuits allege violations of the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Critics say the initiative allows individuals like Musk to government decisions without sufficient transparency or oversight.
