“Doom” works on Bitcoin, Dogecoin and ChatGPT, and now also in PDF format

It became a meme about whether the classic video game Loss can be played on almost any type of device or platform – and one popular file format is the latest in this long line.

Crypto brothers got the flagship shooter running on Bitcoin as well as Dogecoin via his NFT-type protocols, respectively named Ordinary And Doginalswhile students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) speculated that it could even work using intestinal bacteria.

Now, an alleged high school student named Ading2210 on GitHub allowed everyone to play Loss in a portable document format, usually called PDF. Players can simply open the game in their Chromium-based browser: Google Chrome, Courageous navigatoretc., and play using document buttons or keyboard commands.

It’s true that it’s a bit shaky. The game is played, but with a heavily pixelated monochrome image and no sound. But it’s more about the exploit of playing Loss in a PDF document, rather than PDFs being the next frontier in the game. In other words, it’s unlikely that anyone to want play Doom via a PDF, but now we know it’s possible.

This has long been a running joke and technical challenge with the iconic 1993 first-person shooter. In 1997, developer id Software made Doom open source, which made the game a favorite for experimentation fans and enthusiasts.

Over the years, developers have managed to make Doom work on ATMs, lawn mowerspregnancy tests, Bitcoin, Dogecoin, ChatGPTand now PDFs. This is just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, there is a Reddit community dedicated to this exact cause called r/ItRunsDoom with over 100,000 members.

On this subreddit, our apparent creator of Doom PDF is proud posted his creationexplaining how he did it. Simply put, he discovered that PDFs support Javascript and that older versions of the Emscripten code compiler can convert the game code to work in that system, provided he uses a lite version of the game .

Although the subreddit loved it, the post is still far from being the community’s all-time favorite post. Currently in first place is Doom works in Minecraftwith other creations to come like Doom on a iPod, ticket validatorand a vape– we really could go on forever.
